Liverpool initiated a significant revamp of their centre-back lineup last summer.
They secured Giovanni Leoni from Serie A club Parma for £26 million. Unfortunately for the 19-year-old, his debut was marred by an ACL injury that is predicted to keep him out until the start of next season.

Leoni is part of a new wave of talented young defenders joining the team during this transformative phase. Jeremy Jacquet and Ifeanyi Ndukwe are set to arrive in the summer, while Mor Talla Ndiaye was brought in during January.
However, reports suggest that sporting director Richard Hughes isn’t finished yet. There are links to various centre-backs, including Alessandro Bastoni and Micky van de Ven, who could potentially join the squad in the coming weeks and months.
Leoni Will Get His Chance
Mondo Primavera is reporting that the club’s transfer dealings for centre-backs this summer will depend on Leoni’s recovery progress.

Expected to re-join first-team training by the end of April, Liverpool should have a better understanding of Leoni’s long-term fitness as pre-season approaches.
If it appears that his rehabilitation will take longer than anticipated, it’s likely that the sporting director will pursue new targets.
The report states, “Leoni’s recovery will significantly impact the management’s decisions this summer.”
“The club has clearly indicated that they do not want to accumulate young central defenders if the existing squad provides assurances.”
“If Leoni shows positive progress during the May assessments, interest in other options could diminish significantly.”

“The strategy for next season seems straightforward: if Leoni’s knee responds well in pre-season training, Liverpool will minimize investments in additional prospects and concentrate on nurturing the former Parma player.”
“Conversely, a strong push for new signings would indicate lingering doubts about the youngster’s complete fitness.”
