Vinicius Junior, a standout player for Real Madrid, has commended Lamine Yamal for addressing the racism he and the Egyptian team encountered during an international match last week. The young Barcelona forward faced additional despicable racist abuse during their clash against Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano over the weekend.
After enduring chants of ‘Whoever doesn’t jump is a Muslim’ during Spain’s 0-0 draw with Egypt, Lamine Yamal took to social media to label the remarks ‘intolerable’ and racist. The Catalan police are currently investigating these incidents, highlighting the alarming prevalence of such chants at the RCDE Stadium.
Continued Racial Abuse at the Metropolitano
Disturbing footage has surfaced from Barcelona’s 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid, where the 18-year-old faced racial abuse yet again. As he approached the corner flag, chants of ‘Go to Morocco’ and other derogatory terms were directed at him from the crowd.
Vinicius Supports Lamine Yamal’s Stance
Prior to Real Madrid’s upcoming match against Bayern Munich, Vinicius shared his thoughts on these troubling incidents. The Brazilian star has become a prominent advocate in the battle against racism in Spanish football in recent years.
“It’s a complex issue that occurs frequently. It’s vital that Lamine voiced his concerns, as it can serve as a beacon for others. I hope he continues this fight. While we may have financial means, impoverished black individuals face greater challenges. I’m not claiming that Spain, Germany, or Portugal are inherently racist countries, but racism exists in every nation. If we unite in this struggle, we can hopefully put an end to the suffering of players and others alike.”
Racial abuse appears to be escalating within Spanish stadiums despite increased efforts by La Liga to combat the issue. The league has been more proactive in pursuing allegations of racial abuse and has even handed down prison sentences in some instances. Yet, these measures seem insufficient to curb the ongoing problem.
