According to a report from HNB, Kerim Mrabti has received a new contract offer from KV Mechelen. The former winger for Birmingham City has successfully transitioned to a central midfielder at the club. The proposed deal is for one year, with the possibility of extending it. However, Mrabti has yet to make a decision and is reportedly willing to take more time before finalizing his commitment to a new contract.
Mrabti initially made his mark in senior football as a winger and occasional striker while playing for Sirius in Upsala. Over two seasons, he netted eight goals in 55 appearances, which led to a move to Djurgarden in Stockholm. During his three seasons there, he scored 22 goals in 93 appearances. In early 2019, he joined Birmingham City on a free transfer, but his spell did not meet expectations, resulting in just three goals from 29 appearances over a year and a half.
In June 2020, Mrabti signed with KV Mechelen, where he has enjoyed several successful seasons. His standout performance came in the 2021/2022 season, when he scored 10 goals and provided six assists across 39 matches. This season, while playing in a deeper role, he has still managed to contribute with five goals and two assists in 26 matches.
Currently, KV Mechelen is striving for European qualification through the Belgian Pro League play-offs. They find themselves at the bottom of the table and need to finish in fourth place to keep their hopes alive for a European ticket. Finishing fifth may also suffice, depending on the outcome of the Belgian Cup final, which features Union St Gilloise against Anderlecht.
