Barcelona is determined to secure a new centre-back this summer in an effort to address their well-documented defensive issues. They are interested in a player with a profile akin to that of Inigo Martinez, whose departure in 2025 contributed to their decline. Although Alessandro Bastoni is at the top of their wishlist, sporting director Deco is also considering other options.
Bastoni is eager to join Barcelona this summer, but they have yet to receive approval from head coach Hansi Flick. Meanwhile, Deco is exploring additional prospects, including Real Sociedad defender Jon Martin, who has emerged as a promising talent in La Liga this season.
Martin aligns with Barcelona’s requirements as a left-sided centre-back. The club has already initiated discussions about a potential transfer, with Sport reporting that Deco met with the 20-year-old’s agent earlier this week.
During the informal meeting, Deco sought to understand the financial implications of a deal for the La Real defender, who played a significant role in their recent Copa del Rey victory. He has also attracted interest from various top clubs, with Real Madrid previously showing interest in his situation.
Affordable Price Point
Although La Real is not keen on selling Martin this summer, he can be signed through an enticing release clause. His contract includes a buyout option of €50 million, which aligns closely with what Barcelona aims to pay for Bastoni, making it an attractive option for the club.
If negotiations for Bastoni prove challenging, Barcelona may accelerate their efforts to sign Martin. However, for the moment, the club is primarily focused on bringing the Inter defender to the Spotify Camp Nou.
