Atletis Simeone: Barça…

Diego Simeone acknowledged it’s “normal” for star forward Julián Álvarez to be linked with clubs such as Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, and Barcelona. This comes as Atlético Madrid prepares to host the Gunners in the Champions League semifinal first leg.

According to ESPN, Barça has approached Atlético regarding a potential summer transfer for Álvarez, who has netted nine goals in this season’s Champions League, though it’s understood that the LaLiga leaders are aware of the difficulties involved in executing such a deal.

Barcelona is on the lookout for a centre-forward to replace Robert Lewandowski, 37, who has received a contract extension offer but under modified terms.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Simeone commented on Álvarez’s future: “I don’t know what’s going on in Julián’s mind. It’s completely understandable that an extraordinary player like him is attracting interest from Arsenal, PSG, and Barcelona, given his immense talent.”

Álvarez played a crucial role in Atlético’s progression, scoring during their 3-2 aggregate victory over Barcelona in the Champions League quarterfinals.

Atlético’s aspirations for silverware this season now hinge on their performance in Europe, following their defeat in the Copa del Rey final to Real Sociedad, and their position in the LaLiga title race, where they lag significantly behind Barça and Real Madrid.

Simeone expressed his excitement about Atlético reaching the Champions League semifinal for the first time in nine years, saying, “It’s not pressure, it’s a responsibility. We’re thrilled to be close to achieving something we’ve never done before.”

He also mentioned that winger Ademola Lookman, who has made a significant impact since joining Atlético mid-season, might not be available for Wednesday’s match due to some discomfort.

“His presence has positively influenced the team,” Simeone remarked. “He brings different offensive qualities… We’ll check to see if he can recover in time for the game.”

Club captain Koke dismissed the idea that the team is driven by a desire to secure a major trophy for veteran forward Antoine Griezmann as he prepares for a move to Orlando City in the MLS this summer.

“It would be incredible for all of us to say goodbye with a Champions League win,” the midfielder stated. “However, our motivation goes beyond Antoine’s farewell. This is a collective effort, and our goal is to achieve the best results, especially in the Champions League right now.”
