Millie Bright Departs…

Chelsea captain Millie Bright has officially announced her retirement from football, effective immediately. This comes after her international retirement last year.

Bright’s season was affected by injury, leading her to feel that now is the right moment to step away from the sport. Throughout her career at Chelsea, she made over 300 appearances, securing her first trophy in 2015 and amassing seven Women’s Super League titles, six FA Cups, and three League Cups.

“Playing for Chelsea over the last 12 years has meant everything to me, but I’m now ready to say farewell to my football career. I’ve given all I could and never dreamed of playing for any other team,” she shared with the club’s media.

“It’s time for me to enter a new chapter. Chelsea will always be a part of me, just in a different capacity,” Bright added. “I’ve always envisioned retiring at this club and I can’t imagine representing another team. I’m incredibly proud of everything I’ve contributed on and off the field throughout the years.”

Bright also revealed, “I’ve been playing through injuries for the last six years and I’m exhausted. I’m ready to move on to new experiences, and being able to stay involved with the club is immensely special to me.”

In a heartfelt letter to Chelsea fans, she said, “I’ve put everything I could into my performances. I can’t give any more physically, and it’s time for me to prioritize my well-being. I look forward to giving back to the club in a different way.”

Reflecting on personal losses over the past few years, she expressed the need to appreciate life more deeply.

The 32-year-old has been with Chelsea for over ten years, having been named captain in 2023, and holds the record for the most Women’s Super League wins.

“We are grateful for Millie’s extraordinary contributions to Chelsea and are pleased to announce she will continue her association with the club as a trustee of our foundation, actively engaging in community support, just as she did while on the pitch,” stated the club.

Bright also earned 88 caps for England, scoring six goals and announcing her retirement from international duty ahead of the 2024 Euros in Switzerland. She captained the team to the finals of the 2023 World Cup.

Head coach of the Lionesses, Sarina Wiegman, praised Bright’s influence on women’s football, stating, “Millie has played an instrumental role in the progress of the women’s game for both England and Chelsea. Her impact is hard to quantify, and she has inspired many, setting high standards and showing what is achievable in the sport.”

Wiegman continued, “Her accomplishments, including winning EURO 2022 and leading England to the World Cup Final, speak volumes about her talent and dedication. We look forward to welcoming her back to a home match to honor her remarkable contribution to the sport. I wish her the best in her future endeavors.”

Chelsea plans to honor Bright’s legacy prior to their final WSL match of the season against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on May 16.
