Everton Chase

Everton is at the forefront of efforts to acquire Juventus defender Federico Gatti as the 2026/27 season approaches. While Crystal Palace and Aston Villa are also interested in the Italian international, Everton appears to be the most determined competitor for his signature.

Everton Tops the Race for Federico Gatti from Juventus

The 27-year-old has struggled to secure a place in Juventus’s lineup under new manager Luciano Spalletti, who favors a defensive lineup featuring players like Pierre Kalulu, Gleison Bremer, and Lloyd Kelly. This adjustment in the team’s hierarchy has sidelined Gatti, and there seems to be no immediate opportunity for him to reclaim his spot. Compounding his challenges, he suffered a broken fibula earlier this year, limiting him to incomplete matches in Serie A since late February.

Gatti’s journey to professional football is notable; he was once a bricklayer before his talent blossomed. Known for his physicality, aerial dominance, and tenacity in one-on-one situations, he is also adept at playing from the back. However, he has some weaknesses; speedy forwards can exploit his vulnerabilities, and a history of disciplinary problems, highlighted by a 13-yellow-card season at Frosinone, indicates he can be reckless under pressure.

Juventus has set a €25 million price for him. While Everton had an initial bid rejected, they are reportedly preparing to submit a new offer after monitoring him for several months, according to Tuttosport, as reported by Sport Witness. Although Palace and Villa regard him as a solid addition to their squads, their interest does not seem to be as advanced as that of Everton.

Can Gatti Resolve Everton’s Defensive Issues or Just Mask Them?

Everton certainly needs a player of his caliber, but strategic decision-making is crucial. With Jarrad Branthwaite often injured, David Moyes finds himself relying on James Tarkowski, Michael Keane, and Jake O’Brien. This group is plagued by age and inconsistency. Gatti could bring a strong Serie A presence, complete with international experience; the €25 million price seems reasonable for what he could offer.

The concern remains that Everton has a pattern of signing capable defenders without addressing the underlying tactical issues that leave them exposed. If Moyes can establish a solid system around Gatti rather than simply integrating him into the existing framework, this acquisition could significantly impact the 2026/27 season.
