Liverpool Advised to ‘Remain Committed’ to Arne Slot Despite Challenges This Season
Following Jurgen Klopp’s departure in 2024, Liverpool found themselves at a crossroads. After enjoying several successful years under Klopp, they appointed Arne Slot, a decision that raised eyebrows among fans.

Slot quickly silenced his detractors by securing the Premier League title in his first season. However, the defense of that title has been far from smooth, with the Reds currently placed 4th in the standings and eliminated from all other competitions.
This disappointing performance comes despite a record investment of £450 million on new players last summer, including notable signings like Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike.
As Liverpool approaches the final three games of the season, they face a crucial decision regarding Slot’s future, with many fans expressing frustration over the team’s performances this year.
Dutch coach Rene Meulensteen shared his thoughts on Slot’s situation at Anfield in a conversation with Anfield Index…

Stick or Twist?
“I would choose to stick with him [Arne Slot],” said Meulensteen. “I know him well and can attest to his capabilities as a coach.”
“He possesses a solid understanding of the game, but he needs to acquire the right players for his system,” he continued.
It’s a valid point that Liverpool’s summer recruits have yet to demonstrate their full potential. £125 million signing Alexander Isak has struggled with injuries since joining, while Florian Wirtz is still working to find his rhythm, despite showing flashes of brilliance.
Hugo Ekitike has been a standout performer, scoring 11 goals in the Premier League, but he is facing a lengthy recovery from a ruptured Achilles injury.

Meanwhile, both full-backs, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, have had difficulty adjusting to Slot’s tactics, while young defender Giovanni Leoni sustained a ruptured ACL just 70 minutes into his Liverpool career.

Slot Must Redeem Himself Next Season
It’s surprising to find Liverpool in this position just a year after clinching the Premier League title. However, Meulensteen believes Slot will need to prove himself once again if the club opts to retain him.
“Things need to click right from the start of next season,” Meulensteen stated. “If they encounter a shaky beginning, critics will quickly return.”
“Everyone knows that Xabi Alonso is available and looking for a new opportunity, which only adds to the pressure,” he added.

The former Liverpool midfielder has been without a role since being dismissed by Real Madrid earlier this season, and he is eager to make a swift return to management. However, reports suggest Liverpool are currently not considering him as a candidate.
