Michael Carrick is focused on avoiding excessive analysis of Manchester United‘s requirements moving forward, following their draw without goals against Sunderland.
The match at Wearside ended in a standstill, with Sunderland creating the majority of the opportunities. They nearly took the lead twice in the second half, but United goalkeeper Senne Lammens made critical saves against Brian Brobbey, and Lutsharel Geertruida struck the post.
Securing a point keeps United in third place, maintaining a four-match unbeaten streak in the Premier League with just two games left this season.
In response to their previous victory over Liverpool, Carrick implemented five changes, yet the Red Devils struggled to create significant threats against Sunderland, with only a last-minute attempt from Matheus Cunha proving dangerous.
The recent win over Liverpool guaranteed United a spot in the Champions League, and Carrick emphasized that Saturday’s performance against Sunderland would not dictate their future strategy, especially with more matches anticipated next season.
He remarked, “It’s just one game, and I believe that to base our analysis for next season on a single match will not be how we proceed, both personally and as a club.”
“We understand our players’ quality, recognize the squad’s composition, and are aware of both our strengths and areas for improvement.”
“Definitely, one match today does not alter our perspective on any of that.”
Joshua Zirkzee was among the changes, making his first start since December 2025.
However, he had a subdued performance, with his only chance coming from a header in the first half that went over the net following a cross from Cunha.
Commenting on Zirkzee’s display, Carrick said: “I think it was a difficult game for all the players, especially away from home, which poses its own challenges.”
“At times, Josh linked up play effectively, while in other moments he may have felt a bit isolated.”
“That’s football; I believe he contributed positively to the team. I understand it can be tough for any player to jump back into the game after some time off.”
“We definitely won’t judge any individual based on a single game today.”

Carrick also refrained from commenting on the incident involving Nilson Angulo, who was accused of a foul on Bruno Fernandes in the closing moments of the match.
Carrick stated, “To be honest, I haven’t actually seen it on the broadcast.”
“Bruno mentioned there was some contact and wasn’t too pleased when he came off the field. The staff on the bench shared similar sentiments. I’m a bit perplexed about the situation and think it’s best for me to avoid getting involved in it.”
