Middlesbrough’s head coach, Kim Hellberg, labeled the team’s defeat against Southampton as ‘one of the toughest days’ in his coaching career.
Boro initially took the lead at St Mary’s but ultimately lost the play-off semi-final in extra time after a goal from Shea Charles, whose cross navigated into the net.

This outcome means that Boro will miss the chance to compete in the play-off final after finishing fifth in the Championship.
“It’s a tough feeling. Over the two legs, we performed exceptionally well, dominating the first leg,” Hellberg shared with BBC Radio Tees.
“We had to battle in the final half hour and created opportunities during transitions, but we didn’t take advantage of them.
“The goal came from a cross that went in, and I’m feeling a whirlwind of emotions right now; I’m experiencing every possible feeling in this moment.
“This has been one of the toughest days of my coaching career. I genuinely feel for everyone associated with the club and wish I could have done more.
“I am incredibly proud of the team for everything they accomplished this season; they played a brand of football that made me proud to witness.”
