Oliver Reiss, the head coach of the Manchester City Under-18s, expressed his pride in his players after they triumphed over their rivals, Manchester United, in the FA Youth Cup final.
Having faced disappointment in two finals last season, Reiss’s squad has made a remarkable comeback by clinching the Premier League U18 North title and completing the double on Thursday.
Reigan Heskey scored the decisive goal late in the match, securing a 2-1 victory over United. This win also marked a significant moment, reminiscent of City’s success against United in the 1986 final, which was the first all-Manchester match in the tournament’s history.
“It’s really just great,” stated Reiss, the German coach. “Of course, it was a final with a title on the line, but I believe this one holds a special significance for us.”
“Facing United 40 years later adds a unique element, making it even more special. I’m just proud and thrilled.”
Concerns were raised regarding the choice of venue for the game, played at the 7,000-capacity Joie Stadium, with City citing ongoing construction at the Etihad Stadium as the reason for the change.
“The atmosphere from both sets of supporters was fantastic,” Reiss noted. “Playing in such a close environment elevates the experience. We were truly happy to play here. My family was in attendance, and celebrating this moment with them made it unforgettable and added to the significance of this final for us.”
