Juventus experienced a setback in their pursuit of Champions League qualification with a loss to Fiorentina on a turbulent day in Serie A.

Meanwhile, their competitors, Como, Milan, and Roma all secured victories, bolstering their chances for a spot in the Champions League.

With one match left in the season, Juventus currently sits in sixth place, trailing Roma and Milan by two points.

Luciano Spalletti addressed the media after the defeat against Fiorentina, expressing disappointment in the team’s inability to perform better, despite the support from fans at the stadium.

He stated to Sky – as reported by Tuttomercatoweb: “I believe we made significant progress. Today, we needed to showcase a level of character that reflected the importance of the match. The moments we faced and our inability to respond and showcase the players’ capabilities makes me reflect on my own role before assessing the team.”

“I told the team that if they perform like this, it’s my responsibility to be scrutinized. The match had its poor moments and some incidents went against us. We found ourselves behind despite not conceding many chances and not starting strongly. We failed to take advantage of the beautiful atmosphere our stadium provided.”

Spalletti emphasized that he bears the responsibility for the team’s inability to avoid conceding goals.

“What do you want me to say? It’s my job to prevent this by ensuring the players have clarity in their thinking, allowing them to play the right passes, create space, and prepare for counter-attacks. These situations can often be decisive.”

He acknowledged the financial implications of missing out on the Champions League: “Ultimately, we didn’t do enough to meet the match’s demands. We also understand that without the Champions League, the club will face financial losses. However, I wouldn’t categorize it as a must-win match. There’s too much emotional pressure these days, and I’m trying to relieve that from the players. The essence of the game remains, and that’s what brought us here. We need to rediscover our game.”

Juventus’ final match of the season will pit them against Torino in what promises to be a challenging Turin derby. Juventus will need to rely on at least a draw from either Milan or Roma to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
