According to Jay Motty from Stretford Paddock, Luke Shaw has had an impressive season with Manchester United, yet he believes the club should consider acquiring an additional left-back during the transfer window.
Shaw, who has faced multiple long-term injuries in his 12 years at United, is enjoying a healthy season, starting every Premier League match.
Despite this, Motty expresses concern that this season might be “an anomaly,” suggesting that an extra left-back might be crucial for the upcoming season, especially with the return of Champions League football.
“It’s unfortunate that injuries have overshadowed his career at United overall,” Motty shared on BBC Radio Manchester’s The Devils’ Advocate podcast. “In the five seasons leading up to this one, he missed over half the matches, which is regrettable as these should have been his peak years. Between 24 and 29, players typically reach their best form, and we’ve not seen enough of that from him due to injuries.”
“That’s not on him. He endured that devastating injury during Louis van Gaal’s tenure in Europe, along with subsequent injuries and physical issues.”
“Fans were understandably frustrated when he wasn’t fit for club duties only to play for the Euros, but that wasn’t his fault. I wouldn’t hold that against him.”
“He’s been consistently performing well this season, showcasing his talent and experience.”
“It’s a tricky situation for United: if Shaw can maintain his fitness next season, they will be in a great position. However, I have a nagging feeling that this season’s performance is an exception, and they should secure another left-back option.”
“I do have some reservations about his ability to sustain this level of fitness, but if he continues on this path, he remains an exceptional player.”
