According to BBC Sport football reporter Nick Mashiter, Wednesday’s Europa League final “truly represents the last opportunity for this Villa team” to secure a trophy.
After their remarkable 4-2 win against Liverpool on Friday, Villa has ensured their spot in the Champions League. This allows manager Unai Emery to focus solely on capturing his fifth Europa League title.
In a recent episode of the BBC’s More Than The Score podcast, which delves into Emery’s career and motivations, Mashiter stated, “The pressure has eased somewhat. Unai Emery has consistently emphasized that the league was the main objective, and achieving Champions League qualification was paramount. They have accomplished that and secured their place.”
“Emery is a highly driven and detail-oriented individual. It’s not just about the Europa League; he took over Aston Villa when they were near the relegation zone under Steven Gerrard, and in just three and a half years, he’s built them into a team that competes consistently, qualified for Europe, and is now in a significant European final for the first time since 1982.”
“Villa hasn’t lifted a trophy in 30 years, so he’s transformed the club into one that regularly contends for European berths and silverware,” Mashiter continued. “They previously reached two semi-finals but fell short each time, so overcoming Nottingham Forest in the semi-final was a significant achievement.”
