Martin O’Neill believes there remains a valuable role for “older gentlemen” in football management as he keeps the door open for a possible extension of his tenure at Celtic.

The 74-year-old manager led Celtic to victory in the Scottish Premiership during his two interim spells this season, culminating in a dramatic win over Hearts on the final day.

Next, he will focus on securing a double for the club in the Scottish Cup final against Dunfermline Athletic on Saturday, which is expected to be his last match in charge.

Although O’Neill’s attention is solely on that upcoming match, he acknowledges that the past eight months have reaffirmed his belief that he still has a lot to contribute.

“I find it gratifying to reflect on the fact that there is still a place in this game for older gentlemen,” O’Neill shared with BBC Scotland. “Even with the changing tactics in football, I believe that someone with experience can still make a significant impact.”

He continued, “When I took over back in October, I was apprehensive about returning after a lengthy absence; the game has evolved with various playing styles. My primary concern was whether I was too old to be in this profession, but now I take pride in what I’ve accomplished.”

Celtic had shown interest in Motherwell’s Jens Berthel Askou, but he is set to join Toulouse. Additionally, Robbie Keane of Ferencvaros has also been mentioned as a potential candidate.

O’Neill stated that he has not engaged in significant discussions with Celtic’s management regarding a role for the upcoming season.

When asked if there would be any conversations following the Scottish Cup final, O’Neill replied, “I truly do not know.” He added, “I wouldn’t expect anyone to say anything to me either. The priority is to get through Saturday and then see what happens next.”
