Pep Guardiola has expressed that his greatest regret during his tenure at Manchester City is not providing Joe Hart, the England goalkeeper, an opportunity to showcase his talent.
The 55-year-old Spaniard, who is set to lead his final match for City this Sunday against Aston Villa, allowed Hart to go on loan to Torino shortly after his arrival at the club, before acquiring Claudio Bravo in 2016 and Éderson the next season.
Guardiola shared with Sky Sports, “I want to admit that I have regrets. When faced with numerous decisions, mistakes can happen.
“But I’ve held on to a deep-rooted regret for many years: not allowing Joe Hart the chance to prove how talented he truly was.
“I should have given him an opportunity, not just because I have great respect for Claudio and Éderson, who were both significant signings, but at that moment, I could have said, ‘Let’s give it a try together, and if it doesn’t work, we’ll find another solution.’
“But that’s how things unfolded. Life requires tough choices, and sometimes I don’t feel I’ve been just enough.”

He continued, “Perhaps with more time and learning, I could have done better… But I regret that decision to this day.
“At that point, I had strong beliefs and was set in my decisions. When I’m unsure, I seek advice, but when I’m completely convinced, I say, ‘This is the way we’ll proceed’. I’ve been part of a club that has fully supported me in those decisions.”
Guardiola emphasized that managing human emotions is one of the most challenging aspects of his role, especially when dealing with players not included in the squad, and he has always strived to approach these situations with “humanity and respect.”
He concluded, “If I have fallen short in that regard, I sincerely apologize, as that was never my intention, nor the intention of the club.”
