Gordon Arrives in…

Anthony Gordon has officially arrived in Barcelona to finalize a €70 million ($81 million) transfer from Newcastle United.

According to ESPN, an agreement has been reached between Barcelona and Newcastle that could exceed €80 million with various add-ons.

At 25 years old, Gordon arrived in the Catalan capital on Thursday to undergo a medical examination, paving the way for his transfer to Spotify Camp Nou.

Sources revealed to ESPN that Barcelona aimed to conclude the deal before the World Cup, where Gordon will play for the Three Lions, prompting accelerated discussions between the clubs this week.

Gordon’s representative Adam Dugdale visited Barcelona earlier this month for meetings with sporting director Deco, who later traveled to England as the deal approached its final stages.

Interest from Bayern Munich and Liverpool was also noted, with sources indicating that Bayern had approached Newcastle regarding a potential deal.

However, with Gordon eager to join Barcelona, the club increased their pursuit, aiming to reshape their attack led by Lamine Yamal for coach Hansi Flick in the upcoming season.

Club representatives maintain that Gordon’s acquisition is not linked to their search for a new striker to replace outgoing Robert Lewandowski.

ESPN previously reported that Atlético Madrid‘s Julián Álvarez remains Barcelona’s top target, alongside Chelsea‘s João Pedro and Bayern’s Harry Kane.

Nonetheless, Gordon’s arrival brings uncertainty regarding Marcus Rashford‘s future.

Rashford enjoyed a successful loan spell at Barcelona this season, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists, and the club holds an option to permanently sign the England forward from Manchester United for €30 million.

Despite Gordon joining the club, sources affirm that it doesn’t eliminate the possibility of Rashford returning; however, given that both players favor left-wing roles, complications may arise unless there are notable departures from Barcelona’s attacking lineup.
