Liverpool finalizes

Liverpool have opted not to re-sign one of Jurgen Klopp’s favored players.

In 2025, Liverpool made several unexpected transfers, some of which have not aged well, particularly those that involved outgoing players.

However, there’s still an opportunity for Liverpool to make amends if they choose. The club sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for approximately €35 million, and since then, the centre-back has excelled in Germany.

His performances have been impressive enough to earn him a spot on the England World Cup squad. Quansah has emerged as a dependable defender with the potential to compete at the highest level, along with the added benefit of his homegrown status.

Interestingly, he had already shown promise before Arne Slot took over, as Klopp had begun starting the young player over Ibrahima Konate towards the end of his time in charge.

It’s clear that Liverpool may have misjudged his value at the time of the sale, yet there is a buyback clause in the deal, and technically, two options exist.

Bild reports that Liverpool turned down the opportunity to activate the buyback clause worth €80 million this summer. This clause would have allowed them to bring Quansah back to Anfield immediately.

Consequently, Quansah is poised to continue with Leverkusen for the 2026/27 season, and it’s likely that Liverpool will reassess the situation afterward.

As it stands, there will be no swift return for the young defender.

He concluded his domestic season on May 16, netting a 77th-minute equalizer in a 1–1 draw against Hamburger SV.

World Cup Selection

Quansah’s steady performances in the Bundesliga have secured him a place in Thomas Tuchel’s final 26-player England squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup in North America. After recovering from a thigh injury that sidelined him from the March international camp, he is set to take part in his first major senior tournament.

Liverpool’s Transfer Position

Despite the ongoing speculation, recent reports confirm that Liverpool have decided not to trigger their buyback clause for the defender this summer.
