Paul Lambert is convinced that Scotland “absolutely” needs to secure a win in their opening World Cup match against Haiti, stating that “three points can lead us through to the next round.”
Steve Clarke’s team has arrived in the US and is set to play a final warm-up match against Bolivia in New Jersey on Saturday before facing Haiti in their Group C opener on June 14 in Massachusetts.
After Haiti, Scotland will take on Morocco and Brazil.
“The system Steve adopts will be crucial, whether he opts for two strikers up front or adjusts his approach,” Lambert shared with BBC Radio Scotland. “We absolutely need that result, no matter the tactics, especially since the subsequent games could prove to be tougher. He’ll need to get it right.”
“Given the tournament format and our favorable draw, securing three points could be sufficient for progression. It may depend on outcomes in other groups, but getting four points would almost guarantee advancement,” he added.
“Winning that first match is essential. Even a last-minute goal can set the tone for the rest of the tournament.”
Teenager Tyler Fletcher has been called up to replace the injured Billy Gilmour, who sustained a knee injury during Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Curacao at Hampden.
“One player’s setback can be another’s opportunity; Stevie clearly believes that Fletcher is the best fit at this moment,” remarked Lambert, who participated in Scotland’s last World Cup campaign in 1998. “I trust his skills, but what truly matters will be his character off the pitch, how he engages with teammates, and how he behaves in front of the more seasoned players. It’s not surprising, really.”
“I’m not sure if Gilmour would have started. He’s performed well in various matches, but I don’t know if he was slated to be in the starting eleven, even though he’s a talented player. Stevie will certainly have a clear plan for his lineup for the first game and will know exactly who will take the field.”
