Lens head coach Pierre Sage has opted to leave Les Sang et Or after just one season at the helm. The former Lyon manager took over from Will Still a year ago and led Lens to their first Coupe de France title, while also making the Ligue 1 title race more competitive against PSG. During his time with Lens, Sage recorded 28 wins, four draws, and eight losses over 40 matches.

Given the challenges of repeating this success next season, especially with the added demands of at least eight Champions League fixtures, Sage began exploring his options as multiple European clubs expressed interest. L’Equipe has reported that Lens executives were not shocked when Sage announced his departure on Tuesday.

Following Lens’ Coupe de France victory, the 47-year-old stated to various French media outlets that, although his heart remained with Lens, he was in high demand and needed to evaluate his options, even though he was under contract until 2028. These comments were reportedly not well received by Lens, with some saying the relationship had become “beyond repair.”

L’Equipe also indicates that Sage was open to a second season in Northern France, but Lens did not wish to continue with a manager whose commitment seemed uncertain. Additionally, the anticipated arrival of Lorient assistant coach Yannick Cahuzac has reportedly created tension within the coaching staff.

The report suggests that Crystal Palace have identified Sage as their top choice to replace Oliver Glasner. Lens is expected to enter discussions with the Eagles regarding Sage’s exit terms. Palace are reportedly prepared to significantly increase Sage’s salary, potentially tripling or quadrupling his current earnings at Lens, to realize his ambition of coaching in the Premier League.
