Omar Berrada, CEO of Manchester United, has indicated that the club plans to target players with Premier League experience again during the upcoming transfer window. This follows the successful signings of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha from domestic rivals last summer.
The club is prioritizing midfield reinforcement ahead of the next season and has already secured a £35 million ($47 million) deal with Atalanta for Éderson, a Brazil international.
Additionally, the club is looking into a deal for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes and continues to evaluate left-back Lewis Hall‘s circumstances at Newcastle.
Berrada noted that the successful acquisitions of Mbeumo and Cunha have motivated the recruitment team to focus on players with proven abilities in the Premier League.
“The approach we took last summer will be similar this time around,” Berrada said on the club’s Inside Carrington podcast on Thursday.
“Entering a transfer window always comes with uncertainty. It’s crucial to be well-prepared with a clear strategy and an understanding of which positions need strengthening.”
“We have a clear plan moving forward. Our experience from last season demonstrates that we want a balance of seasoned players and emerging talents.”
“We aim to combine individuals who have proven success in the Premier League with those performing exceptionally well outside it.”
“Our decisions will always be made with both immediate and long-term success in mind.”
Along with enhancing their midfield options, Berrada also expressed the club’s intention to retain captain Bruno Fernandes this summer.
The Portugal international attracted interest from Al Hilal last summer and has left the possibility open for a move after the World Cup.
“Bruno is an exceptional captain,” Berrada stated. “We would definitely like him to stay. He has had an outstanding season.”
“More importantly, he has proven to be a remarkable leader. His contributions off the pitch may go unnoticed, but he truly embodies the club’s values.”
United had a strong finish under Michael Carrick, concluding the season in third place in the Premier League and securing a Champions League spot.
Carrick has now been confirmed as the permanent head coach, and Berrada expressed optimism about the club’s future.
“I am quite hopeful and believe we are in a strong position,” he said. “After facing challenges, we are moving in the right direction with the right personnel in place.”
“We possess the correct elements and an environment conducive to achieving tremendous success.”
