Versatile Roles for…

For many summers, the speculation linking Bernardo Silva to Barcelona has persisted, seemingly endless.

He appears to be a perfect fit for the Blaugrana at some stage in his career. However, Barcelona’s financial difficulties and Silva’s aspirations have continuously blocked the move.

Just when it seemed the Barcelona-Silva saga had reached its conclusion, a new opportunity has emerged like never before.

With Bernardo Silva’s contract with Manchester City set to expire at the end of the 2025/26 season, it appears that Hansi Flick is ready to sanction his transfer to Barcelona.

A Solution for Pedri

Bernardo’s role can best be understood as a high-quality midfield rotation option—not as a direct substitute for Pedri, but as a safeguard for him.

Barcelona has struggled to manage Pedri’s workload without sacrificing control in midfield. The Canary Islander is a unique talent within the squad, lacking a suitable replacement.

Bernardo brings exactly what is needed: composure, technical ability, press resistance, and recovery skills in a possession-dominant system.

For years, Manchester City built their style of play around Bernardo, just as Barcelona has with Pedri. Their collaboration would offer Hansi Flick a remarkable tactical advantage.

While they aren’t identical players, they can occupy similar roles. Pedri often deals with fitness issues, but having Bernardo available for rotation can help Flick safeguard the young Spaniard’s health.

During the 2025/26 season, Barcelona secured Roony Bardghji as a right-wing backup for Lamine Yamal. While the young Swedish talent has shown glimpses of promise, he has struggled for playing time.

At this point in his career, Roony needs more regular minutes, which will be hard to come by with Lamine ahead of him on the depth chart.

Consequently, Barcelona may consider moving the young player on this summer, necessitating the acquisition of a backup for their star No. 10. This is where Bernardo steps in.

Additionally, the Manchester City captain’s contributions extend beyond midfield. On the right flank, he offers a contrasting style to Lamine Yamal. While he may lack explosive speed, he brings a calm demeanor, strong association skills, and the ability to help Barca maintain control of matches.

In European competition, this trait could be invaluable. Flick’s vision for Barcelona emphasizes both intensity and the ability to manage games effectively, and Bernardo excels in this area.

There’s also the option of deploying him as a central attacking midfielder, particularly in matches where Barcelona needs an additional passer behind the striker. However, Fermin and Olmo are well-established in that position.

Ultimately, Bernardo doesn’t just address one major concern for Barcelona—he resolves multiple smaller issues all at once.

He is the kind of player every squad dreams of having. Regardless of the position he occupies, he gives his utmost on the pitch.

Instead of arriving in Barcelona with the intention of being the star, Bernardo will contribute in a supportive role—like Katherine Heigl joined a successful series in its penultimate season, yet still managed to add significant value. This is precisely what Flick requires at this juncture.
