Florentino Perez Emerges…

Florentino Perez has secured his position as president of Real Madrid, defeating Enrique Riquelme in the 2026 presidential election. At 79 years old, Perez, who called for the first election in two decades, will maintain the role he has held since 2009.

Facing significant backlash after another season without a major trophy, Perez demanded an election. Riquelme was confirmed as his opponent, leading to the first presidential vote since 2006. Despite promises to acquire Erling Haaland and Jurgen Klopp, Riquelme ultimately fell short.

In a brief statement to his supporters, Riquelme acknowledged his defeat. “Congratulations to Florentino for his victory, and to the Real Madrid members who participated in the vote. This is a great win for his candidacy. However, for us, this is just the beginning. Real Madrid won’t go another 20 years without an election. The members will continue to have their say for the next four years. It’s important to respect the legacy and engage in discussions that we haven’t had in a long time. It’s been a pleasure to engage with all of you.”

With Perez’s victory, plans for key signings can move forward, including the confirmation of Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese coach returns to the Bernabeu 13 years after his first tenure, aiming to revitalize a club that has struggled recently.

Perez’s election also allows for completing pre-arranged transfers for players Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries. Furthermore, he can advance plans for a club-record bid to acquire Michael Olise from Bayern Munich.
