Despite the incident happening near the halfway line, Reggiani was deemed Italy’s last defender, leading referee Yigal Frid to issue the straight red card.
With this incident, Reggiani became the 17th player to debut for Italy under interim coach Silvio Baldini in the past two matches. Baldini embraced Reggiani warmly as he left the field after the dismissal.
In March, Reggiani became the youngest Italian player to score in the Bundesliga.
