Poch: Never Too Late for…

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — U.S. men’s national team coach Mauricio Pochettino declared that the time for fiery speeches has passed and his squad is primed for their opening match against Paraguay on Friday.

During a news conference on Thursday, Pochettino emphasized that while he could deliver the best motivational speeches, nothing can replace a player’s readiness for the game.

“Now is the time for them to prepare emotionally and mentally; I believe everyone understands how to get ready,” he stated.

“They don’t require an external motivator or an inspiring speech at this stage. Knowing the players’ mindset is crucial for them to deliver their best performance.”

“Motivational speeches are necessary when they need to engage in training and enhance their skills, as waiting until tomorrow could be too late. If they’re not prepared, I can give the best motivational speech, but if they’re not ready, it becomes impossible to perform.”

Pochettino confirmed that all 26 players are available for selection, including defender Chris Richards, who has recovered from a sprained ankle and returned to full training this week.

“We are thrilled to start the competition with a full roster of 26 players available for selection,” Pochettino said. “Chris is fit to play, and we’ll decide whether he starts or comes off the bench. We appreciate the dedication of our medical and performance staff in his recovery.”

He also indicated that he has made his decision regarding the starting lineup but didn’t reveal the details.

“There’s a growing energy in the group, and everything feels positive at this moment, which brings us joy,” he added.

Pochettino reflected on the progress the team has made during his 20 months in charge.

Pulisic: USMNT wants to showcase their competitiveness

“Ultimately, it’s about consistency in our efforts, which is why we feel we are entering this tournament in a strong position,” he stated, noting that the team’s improvement began with a shift in the players’ mindset.

“This change is significant and will leave a lasting legacy for the future,” he added.

This marks the first time since 1994 that the U.S. is co-hosting the World Cup, along with Canada and Mexico.

Regarding Paraguay, Pochettino anticipates a challenging match on Friday at SoFi Stadium, acknowledging La Albirroja’s successful World Cup qualifying campaign, which included victories over both Argentina and Brazil.

“I expect a very difficult game; it’s our opening match and Paraguay is known for their competitiveness and aggressiveness,” he said.

“They have an excellent coach in Gustavo Alfaro, who I respect and admire immensely, making this match a formidable challenge.”

Pochettino was asked how this U.S. team could inspire fans to celebrate in the streets like Argentina did after winning the World Cup or like the New York Knicks did after securing Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday.

“It’s infectious, and we must play with passion,” Pochettino remarked. “Winning is crucial, but playing with passion is equally important to make fans proud of what they witness on the field.”

“Creating that emotional connection will encourage people to celebrate us. However, we must focus on winning. The support of our fans is vital for success. After our friendlies in Charlotte and Chicago, I know the fans stand with us.”
