Iran kicked off their World Cup 2026 with a draw against New Zealand, but they received overwhelming support from the Iranian community at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, having triumphed over significant challenges just to be part of the tournament.

The Asian squad rallied twice, with goals from Ramin Rezaeian and Mohammad Mohebbi, while Eli Just scored two goals for the All Whites, leading to a final score of 2-2.

Historically, this was the first World Cup match to take place with a host nation at war with a competing team. Iran faced the prospect of being barred from the tournament due to the U.S. and Israel’s bombing campaign initiated in February. The team had to shift their training location from the U.S. to Mexico due to visa complications, and 11 non-playing officials were still prohibited from entering the U.S. for the matches.

Fans displayed ‘Lion and Sun’ flags, a symbol of Iran pre-1979 Islamic revolution, despite attempts by FIFA to prohibit them, and there were noticeable boos from the Iranian diaspora during the national anthem before the game. However, the overwhelming sentiment among fans was one of support for the team, emphasizing a separation from the regime.

Iran started the match strongly but found themselves trailing in the seventh minute when Nottingham Forest forward Chris Wood held up the ball effectively, setting up Just, who volleyed a shot past Alireza Behranvand in goal.

Iran’s captain, Mehdi Taremi, made a strong impression by striking the post after a remarkable solo run from his own half. The equalizer for Iran came in the 32nd minute when a deflected attempt from Shahriyar Moghanloo found its way to right-back Rezaeian, who tapped it in following a forward run.

Just netted his second goal for New Zealand ten minutes into the second half, capping off a well-coordinated team effort, but Iran equalized again when Rezaeian delivered a cross from the right and Mohebbi expertly headed the ball in off the post. Both teams had opportunities to clinch the victory, but the match concluded in a stalemate.
