Four paths for Barcelona…

Four paths for Barcelona…

Barcelona is likely facing a significant decision regarding Jan Virgili, and there are several factors at play.

Previously, it was reported that Barcelona officials met with the winger’s representatives at Ciutat Esportiva to discuss his future following Mallorca’s relegation to Segunda División.

It’s important to remember that despite Virgili leaving Barcelona in 2025, the Blaugrana still retain 40% of his rights, allowing them considerable leverage over any potential developments.

With the 19-year-old eager to continue playing at the highest level, Barcelona is exploring various options.

The Most Obvious Option

The clearest pathway is a return to Barcelona.

Notably, Mallorca’s relegation has reduced Virgili’s release clause from €30 million to €12 million.

Given that Barcelona already controls 40% of his rights, acquiring the remaining 60% would require an investment of around €7.2 million.

This is seen as a favorable deal, particularly considering the player’s progress over the last season. Virgili’s ability to operate on both wings would add valuable depth to the squad.

His versatility could prove even more critical if Roony Bardghji departs this summer, making him a viable backup for Lamine Yamal across various competitions.

Barcelona’s Financial and Loan Strategies

The second scenario, as reported by Mundo Deportivo, involves Barcelona re-signing Virgili with the intention of selling him for a profit.

His estimated market value is currently around €15 million, allowing Barcelona a potential profit from a future sale.

The third option includes signing the winger and immediately loaning him to another top-flight team. This would facilitate his development through regular playing time while allowing Barcelona to maintain control of a player whose value could increase.

This approach would enable Virgili to evolve through consistent playing time, while Barcelona retains ownership of a player whose worth could continue to climb.

Lastly, the report indicates that the fourth possibility is to negotiate with Real Betis after re-signing him, given the strong relationship between the two clubs, which could lead to a mutually beneficial agreement.

Ultimately, Barcelona’s decision will rest on Hansi Flick’s assessment of the squad as they approach the upcoming season.

If the coach feels Virgili can make an immediate impact, a return becomes more viable. Otherwise, the club may opt to capitalize on the player’s market value.
