FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Morocco’s coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, expressed strong support for captain Achraf Hakimi, describing him as “very relaxed” despite the recent announcement that he will stand trial in a rape case, confirmed by a French appeals court.
Hakimi led Morocco to a 1-0 victory over Scotland on the same day the court released its decision.
The defender had contested a ruling from February which determined he should face trial after public prosecutors made recommendations to that effect. The court’s announcement came mere hours before the match against Scotland. Hakimi maintains his innocence.
When queried about managing Hakimi in light of the situation, Ouahbi responded: “Did you see the game? Hakimi was extraordinary. We’re very relaxed; he’s very relaxed, and I believe he played excellently.”
Notably, Hakimi received boos from certain sections of the crowd during the game.
“He performed well. Why discuss management?” Ouahbi continued. “He came in, had his breakfast like everyone else, was focused, and played strongly. That’s exactly what he did.”
“We don’t need to say anything—our support is unconditional. Hakimi is calm, and we hope he will prove himself as the best wingback in the world. This is significant for me, the players, and the 44 million Moroccans supporting us.”
Hakimi was initially charged with rape in March 2023 following allegations from a 24-year-old woman who claimed she was assaulted at his home in a Paris suburb.
The Versailles appeals court has announced that sufficient evidence has been established to formally charge Hakimi with rape. In a media release, the court confirmed the findings from their investigation warranted the trial.
Rachel-Flore Pardo, the attorney for the plaintiff, stated that after three years of legal struggles, the court’s ruling provides her client with “some relief and hope” following extensive defamation from Hakimi’s defense.
In a message posted on X, Hakimi remarked that his case might have been dismissed if he were not a public figure, claiming he feels like he has become “an easy target.” He expressed concern over the impact this case has had on his family and the pursuit of truth.
A trial date has yet to be determined.
