In a stunning turn of events at this World Cup, Curaçao, the smallest nation to ever compete in the tournament, secured a remarkable 0-0 draw against Ecuador, thanks to an extraordinary performance by goalkeeper Eloy Room.
Room, who previously suffered a heavy defeat to Germany, delivered a breathtaking performance on Saturday. The goalkeeper made 15 saves, falling just one shy of the World Cup single-game record, as he managed to keep Ecuador scoreless amid relentless pressure from La Tri.
This exceptional display positions Room alongside some of the all-time greats in World Cup history. The single-game record of 16 saves is held by the United States’ Tim Howard, achieved in 2014 during a Round of 16 match against Belgium. While Howard’s efforts couldn’t prevent the U.S. from losing that encounter 2-1, Room was able to withstand immense pressure and maintain the draw.
Despite facing 28 total shots from Ecuador, Room and Curaçao managed to secure their first-ever point in World Cup history with this draw.
It’s worth noting that many of Room’s saves weren’t overly challenging, as quite a few of Ecuador’s attempts went directly to him. However, he also faced a number of dangerous opportunities, with a substantial portion of La Tri’s shots on goal categorized as significant chances, according to Fotmob.
Regardless, the number of chances Ecuador had should have been sufficient to secure at least one goal, but Room remained steadfast and composed throughout.
This draw not only frustrates Ecuador’s offensive ambitions but also complicates their path in the group stage. With a previous loss to Ivory Coast due to a last-minute goal, La Tri now requires a victory over Germany to secure a better chance of advancing.
