South Africa has accomplished what many deemed impossible this summer, as Hugo Broos’ team stunned Son Heung-Min and the Korea Republic with a 1-0 victory, securing their place in the knockout stage for the very first time.

While South Africa is often remembered for hosting the World Cup in 2010, the introduction of the Vuvuzela, and Siphiwe Tshabalala’s unforgettable opening goal against Mexico, few predicted their advancement from Group A.

Following an opening defeat to El Tri, South Africa rallied to secure a 1-1 draw against Czechia, setting the stage for a decisive match against the Taegeuk Warriors. A 63rd minute goal from 22-year-old Thapelo Maseko clinched the victory and a ticket to the Round of 32.

Now looking ahead to a matchup with Canada this Sunday, Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams discussed the motivation that drove him and his teammates to achieve this remarkable triumph.

“I’m at a loss for words. Proud is an understatement,” the 34-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns keeper shared in his post-match remarks with FOX Soccer.

“The level of pressure this team faces, both on and off the field, is immense. For us to perform today, especially when the odds were stacked against us, fueled something within. Seeing all the articles predicting teams to exit the group, while we had no chance, just motivated us more…it felt like everyone was against us.”

“We will channel that energy into our performance,” he expressed. “The determination the team showed today? Incredible.”

Williams and his teammates are bracing for a significant challenge against a Canadian team that advanced from Group B, having bettered Bosnia & Herzegovina, despite a tough match against Switzerland without key player Alphonso Davies.

Will South Africa continue to make waves this summer? Tune in on Sunday to find out!
