Before Germany’s 2-1 win over Ivory Coast on June 20, Bastian Schweinsteiger, speaking as a commentator on German broadcaster ARD, described the Ivorians’ approach as somewhat unorthodox, wild, and less driven by tactics, adding that Germany should expect unpredictability.
The remarks sparked debate in the German media. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp declined to engage when asked about the issue. Speaking to reporters in New York while attending the World Cup, he called it a serious topic and said he didn’t know what would be appropriate to say, noting that people from Africa and others might view it differently.
Despite their loss to Germany, Ivory Coast progressed to the last 32 after beating Ecuador and Curacao in Group E. They will play France or Norway in the first knockout round on June 30 in Arlington, Texas.
