Chelsea is looking into a potential transfer for Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, according to sources speaking to ESPN.
New manager Xabi Alonso, who takes over on July 1, has a strong rapport with the 33-year-old and sees him as a vital leader for a relatively young squad.
The oldest player on Chelsea’s roster is currently Tosin Adarabioyo, aged 28, reflecting the club’s recent focus on acquiring young talent with long-term contracts.
However, sources indicate that the club plans to adjust this strategy in light of last season’s lackluster 10th place finish, aiming to provide Alonso with greater influence over transfer decisions.
Xhaka is reportedly receptive to the move, but negotiations between the clubs may encounter challenges. Sunderland is reluctant to part ways with the midfielder, who was promptly named captain upon joining from Bayer Leverkusen for €20 million (£17.2m). He has become a respected presence at the club and is under contract until 2028.

Given that Xhaka turns 34 in September, Chelsea may be hesitant to offer a substantial fee. He is currently participating in the World Cup with Switzerland and previously spent seven years with Arsenal, where he and Alonso celebrated winning the club’s first Bundesliga title in the 2023-24 season.
Additionally, ESPN sources indicate that Chelsea has rejected a £22 million offer, including add-ons, from Italian club Como for defender Trevoh Chalobah.
The club is reportedly seeking £35 million for Chalobah’s transfer.
