Tottenham has finalized a club-record transfer deal worth £85 million ($112 million) with West Ham for Mateus Fernandes, according to sources reported by ESPN.
Last week, ESPN revealed that Spurs aimed to compete with Manchester United for the 21-year-old midfielder, and sources indicate that they presented a more attractive financial package to secure his signature amidst fierce competition.
Despite their relegation to the Championship, the Hammers maintained a firm stance on their valuation, and Spurs’ readiness to meet it highlights their commitment to supporting Roberto de Zerbi in the transfer market this summer.
This transfer fee eclipses Tottenham’s previous record of £65 million ($86 million) paid to Bournemouth for Dominic Solanke in 2024. Fernandes will become their fifth signing of the summer, joining goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, and Andy Robertson.
Additionally, Tottenham has seen a £75 million ($99 million) bid for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali rejected and is considering a revised offer, while both Arsenal and Manchester City are also monitoring the situation.
Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton last summer for an initial fee of £38 million ($50 million), which also includes a clause granting Southampton 15% of any future transfer fee.
In his debut season, the 21-year-old recorded four goals and four assists in 38 matches.
Sources indicate that Manchester United made a strong effort to acquire Fernandes but were unwilling to meet Tottenham’s offer.
Diving deeper, it’s reported that Fernandes did not express a clear preference for either club during negotiations, which led Manchester United to question his eagerness to join Old Trafford.

Last summer, players like Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha made it clear they only wanted to play for United, despite interest from other clubs.
United ultimately opted against matching Tottenham’s bid for Fernandes due to uncertainty regarding his commitment to the move.
