Serie A runners-up Napoli have officially appointed Massimiliano Allegri as their new manager.
This appointment had been anticipated for weeks, following Antonio Conte’s announcement of his departure from Napoli at the end of May, and after AC Milan sacked Allegri due to what they called “an unequivocal failure” of a season.
Allegri has inked a three-year deal with Napoli.
– Harry Kane: ‘I feel as good as I’ve ever felt going onto the pitch’
– Julian Nagelsmann out as Germany boss, Jürgen Klopp lined up as replacement
– Lionel Messi has world ‘crazy about him’ and ‘another story to tell’ with Argentina – Carlos Tevez
Allegri previously led AC Milan to the Serie A title in 2011 during his first tenure at the San Siro and achieved five league titles and five Coppa Italia trophies with Juventus.
Last year, he returned to Milan with the goal of securing a Champions League spot after they placed eighth in Serie A the prior season.
Despite spending much of the season near the top of the table and contending for the title, a disappointing end with only two wins in their last eight matches left Milan in fifth place on the final day.
Napoli, who struggled with injury setbacks all season long, finished the campaign in second place.
Conte, who led Napoli to the Serie A title in his first season at the helm, is now considered among the top candidates to take over the Italian national team for a second stint as Azzurri manager.
