Manchester United has officially announced the location of their planned 100,000-seat stadium.
The upcoming venue, which will be the largest in the UK by capacity, is set to be constructed approximately 350 meters northwest of Old Trafford in Stretford, situated between John Gilbert Way, Wharfside Way, and Europa Way.
In June, the club revealed that they had acquired 25 acres of land in the vicinity, with club officials estimating the total cost of the project to be around £2 billion ($2.64 billion).
The plans unveiled on Thursday position the new stadium, which is yet to be named, as part of a broader “sports-led regeneration of Trafford Wharfside.”
The stadium’s rendering depicts a more conventional bowl-shaped structure as opposed to the striking canopy design that was presented previously. However, United clarified that these images are not the final designs.
The club’s statement indicated that the proposed “Stadium District” will be specifically designed for both entertainment and sports, emphasizing improvements to transportation links, as well as enhanced walking and cycling routes in the area.
Additionally, the club anticipates that the project will generate 48,000 local jobs and 15,000 new homes.
“The release of the Wharfside Masterplan represents another important step in our mission to establish a new world-class venue for Manchester United in the midst of a dynamic and evolving district for Trafford and Greater Manchester,” stated Collette Roche, CEO of the stadium development.
“The proposed stadium’s location is perfectly positioned next to Old Trafford, allowing us to maintain the heritage, traditions, and matchday experiences that our supporters cherish, while also providing the necessary connectivity and infrastructure to deliver an exceptional fan experience.”
