Adams, South Africa World…

Jayden Adams, a 25-year-old midfielder for South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns, has tragically passed away, just weeks after representing his country in the World Cup.

Adams played in all three group matches for South Africa, which advanced to the knockout stage before being eliminated by co-host Canada in the round of 32.

“It is with great shock and sadness that I learned of Jayden Adams’ passing,” stated Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s minister of sport, arts and culture. “Our nation mourns the loss of one of its brightest young talents, alongside his family, teammates, and the millions of supporters who have watched him develop from a promising academy player to a full-fledged Bafana Bafana international.

Authorities in South Africa are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a man’s body at a residence in Schotschekloof, a neighborhood in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.

McKenzie continued: “The cause of Jayden’s death has not yet been established, and I urge the media and the public to approach this situation with sensitivity and avoid speculation, allowing his family and Mamelodi Sundowns the privacy they require during this challenging time.

“Official updates will be provided by the relevant parties at the appropriate time.”

Adams played in the 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in Group A, despite having learned just hours before kick-off that his grandmother had passed away.

The South African Football Players Union expressed its devastation over Adams’ untimely death, noting that he made his international debut in 2022. “Jayden proudly represented South Africa at the 2026 World Cup, carrying the nation’s hopes with distinction and courage,” they stated. “His passing is a tremendous loss not only to his family and teammates but also to the clubs, the football community, and the country as a whole.”

“South African football has lost a talented player, a dedicated servant of the game, and a young individual who had so much potential ahead of him.”

Adams began his career at Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he secured league and African Champions League titles. He was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and was later called up for the World Cup, where South Africa made history by advancing to the knockout stages for the first time.

“It is profoundly sad to hear of the passing of South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams, especially so soon after his participation in the historic FIFA World Cup campaign,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “My thoughts and condolences, as well as those from everyone at FIFA and the global football community, go out to his family, friends, and teammates. Adam’s contributions to both Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace.”
