Balogun: Red Card…

Folarin Balogun, striker for the United States, acknowledged that the decision to suspend his red card would likely “spark a lot of controversy” during the World Cup and noted the effect it had on his teammates.

The Monaco forward received a straight red card in the round-of-32 match against Bosnia-Herzegovina. However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee later suspended the one-match ban for a year, permitting Balogun to play in the team’s round-of-16 match, which they ultimately lost to Belgium.

As a result, Balogun became the center of significant debate. On Tuesday, the human rights organization FairSquare filed a complaint with the International Olympic Committee, alleging that FIFA President Gianni Infantino violated rules on political neutrality due to his interactions with U.S. President Donald Trump, who admitted to intervening on Balogun’s behalf and for the U.S. as co-hosts.

In an interview with CBS, Balogun expressed, “Initially, I was thrilled to rejoin the team, but upon reflection, I realized it would inevitably lead to controversy, and I could sense a bit of anxiety among my teammates due to the unique circumstances.”

As the match approached, Balogun focused on maintaining his concentration, despite the surrounding noise, which he found challenging to ignore. He stated that his teammates provided him with “a lot of reassurance.”

He added, “It wasn’t something within my control. It was simply an unfortunate situation, which ultimately gave me confidence.”

The Arsenal academy graduate still believes the red card issued for a tackle on Tarik Muharemovic was unjustified.

He remarked, “I was in a state of shock. It wasn’t even a tackle, just a surprising situation. I had to accept the official’s decision and support my team.”

“When there’s no intention behind an action, it should never warrant a red card. It was an unfortunate event that added unnecessary pressure on us.”

FairSquare has claimed that Infantino, who has been an IOC member since 2020, has repeatedly violated the Olympic charter and the IOC’s code of ethics, particularly in regards to how he handled the Balogun situation.

FIFA has not provided any justification for the suspension of the ban.
