In Manchester, around one in 61 individuals face homelessness, but Manchester City defender Rico Lewis is making a difference in what he calls the “best city in the world.”
Lewis, at just 21, initiated the campaign to address some of the highest homelessness rates in the UK, where, according to Shelter, approximately 10,000 people in Manchester lack permanent housing.
The defender teamed up with popular Manchester rapper Nemzzz to host a football tournament aimed at raising funds for charities working to combat homelessness in one of England’s most notable cities.
“I thought, why don’t I learn about Jesus?” – Man City’s Rico Lewis shares how faith transformed his life.
His teammate Phil Foden led a star-studded team that, despite being eliminated in the semi-finals, contributed to an event recognized as a significant success, with aspirations for it to become an annual tradition.
“We live in a world that seems to have more negativity than positivity, and I want to contribute positivity,” Lewis told BBC Sport.
“Manchester is truly the best city in the world, and it breaks my heart to see how many people need help. While we cannot change things overnight, with time, we can make a difference, and I hope to upscale this event every year and increase the donations.”
Alongside Foden, who also missed out on a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, were Southampton midfielder Shea Charles and his brother Pierce, both products of the City Academy, as well as Shea Lacey from Manchester United. The event took place on June 28.
Kaden Braithwaite, captain of City’s U18s to an FA Youth Cup victory last season, was also in attendance. Lewis’s younger sister Sacha, a talented defender in the club’s women’s division, played a part in organizing and participated in the matches as well.
Reflecting on his decision to embrace Christianity, Lewis, who recently married his partner Amelia, shared, “My faith has made me more aware of the suffering of others.”
Rico Lewis is potentially facing a departure from Man City amid upcoming discussions regarding Enzo Maresca’s future.
“Walking through Manchester, I see the numerous people struggling with homelessness. While I may never know the reasons behind each person’s circumstances, I’ve always desired to help those who are most vulnerable.”
“Bringing the community of Manchester together to raise both awareness and funds seemed like the best way to achieve our mission.”
Lewis, who joined City at eight years old, has developed both professionally and personally despite facing challenges last season. He now aims to maintain his position as the club enters a new phase under Enzo Maresca.
