Morgan Rogers has made a significant transfer to Chelsea from Aston Villa, with the deal valued at approximately £117 million. The 23-year-old has signed a seven-year contract, setting a new club record for the Blues. His transfer to Stamford Bridge was finalized on Saturday.
Despite strong interest from Arsenal, who were in negotiations with the England international and initially seen as the frontrunners, Chelsea successfully secured Rogers’s signature.
The opportunity to collaborate with new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso played a crucial role in Rogers’s decision, especially after he helped England earn a third-place finish in the World Cup.
He featured in the 2-1 semi-final loss to Argentina in Atlanta last Wednesday and played a part in the 6-4 victory over France that secured England the bronze.
Rogers expressed his enthusiasm on the club’s website: “I’m incredibly excited. For me, Chelsea is the biggest club in London, a team I have always admired since my youth.
“I’m thrilled about the project with the new manager, the talented players we have, and the direction the club is heading. That’s why I’m here, and I can’t wait to get started.”
A versatile forward capable of playing in various attacking positions, Rogers has rapidly developed at Villa Park since his arrival from Middlesbrough in January 2024, contributing significantly to Villa’s top-four finish and their Europa League qualification last season.
He departs Villa having scored 31 goals in 125 appearances under manager Unai Emery.
This transfer marks one of the most substantial acquisitions under Chelsea’s owners BlueCo during their four-year tenure. It signifies a shift away from the club’s prior strategy of solely recruiting young, untested talent.
Co-owner Behdad Eghbali hinted at the end of last season that the club had learned from an underwhelming campaign, finishing 10th and suffering a heavy defeat in the Champions League Round of 16 against Paris Saint-Germain, stating that they would seek players who could genuinely help them contend for the title.
Alonso, a former Real Madrid midfielder and two-time Champions League winner, was appointed partly to attract high-caliber players to Chelsea.

This transfer stands as one of Chelsea’s most significant moves since Cole Palmer transitioned from Manchester City in 2023.
Rogers is the fourth addition of the summer as Chelsea reshapes their squad, joining defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha, and winger Geovany Quenda.
In June, the club’s attempt to reunite Alonso with Sunderland‘s Granit Xhaka was unsuccessful, as Chelsea chose not to meet Sunderland’s asking price for the player who will turn 34 this September.
