Jermain Defoe, the former England striker, has labeled his initial foray into management as an “eye-opening experience” after parting ways with National League club Woking just four months into his tenure and following six league matches.
The 43-year-old was appointed as the successor to Neal Ardley in March, achieving two victories in those six matches, which led the club to a 10th-place finish last season.

However, on Thursday, Woking announced that Defoe’s time at the club had concluded, as both parties “mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect,” occurring just two weeks prior to the new season’s opener against Sutton United.
In an Instagram post, Defoe expressed, “Regrettably, circumstances have made it untenable for me to remain in the position. I am immensely proud of the work accomplished during my time at the club and truly believed we were constructing something special.” He added, “My experience at Woking FC has been an enlightening managerial journey, one that will surely bolster my strength for the next opportunity in my career.”

Defoe’s tenure at Woking concluded with a 1-0 loss to Braintree Town in one of three pre-season friendlies on Tuesday, marking his ninth and final match in charge.
Throughout his illustrious playing career, Defoe netted 305 goals across 763 senior appearances for clubs such as West Ham, Tottenham, Portsmouth, and Sunderland before retiring in 2022.
Having scored 20 goals in 57 caps for England, Defoe served on the interim coaching staff at Rangers in 2021 and later worked in the Spurs academy before departing in 2024 to pursue a full-time managerial position.
