Croatia international Toni Fruk, just back from the World Cup, scored the decisive goal in the 52nd minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse from Derry.
Tiernan Lynch’s squad will next host the Croatian team at the Brandywell on July 30.
Rijeka Takes Advantage After Tense First Leg
Rijeka controlled most of the first half but couldn’t seriously challenge Derry City’s goalkeeper, Brian Maher. Niko Jankovic, Branko Pavic, and Mladen Devetak all missed chances for the hosts, who struggled to convert possession into clear opportunities.
Derry finally began to find their rhythm in the dying minutes of the half, nearly claiming the lead if not for a last-minute deflection thwarting Duffy’s shot destined for the net.

Rijeka took the lead shortly after the break, with Fruk making the most of Derry’s defensive slip. Moments later, they could have increased their lead, but debutant Brooklyn Lyons-Foster cleared a shot off the line, and Brian Maher denied Tiago Dantas‘ follow-up.
Derry responded with increased urgency after making three substitutions. Adam O’Reilly pushed forward on a counterattack, delivering a precise cross towards Duffy, who was ready to score but was denied by Fruk’s athletic clearance.
Justas Lasickas squandered a golden opportunity for Rijeka in injury time, allowing the Croatian team to head into the second leg with just a one-goal cushion.
