Xabi Alonso’s first outing as Chelsea manager revolved around four centre-forwards: one who looks undroppable, another who misfired and may be moved on, a rising prospect, and a potential arrival.
Joao Pedro stole the show, rattling in a hat-trick inside nine minutes as Chelsea beat Western Sydney Wanderers 6-4 at Accor Stadium, underlining the gap between Premier League and A-League opposition.
Left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad, the forward seemed intent on making a statement, marrying ruthless finishing with power and pace in an entertaining contest.
Alonso said Pedro is hungry and intent on a big season.
Aside from Pedro, Chelsea were often sloppy — hardly surprising given lingering jet lag — and there were few other standouts.
One exception was Dastan Satpaev. The 17-year-old, featuring as a trialist, opened the Alonso era with a stunning strike after just six minutes. He cannot formally complete his switch from FC Kairat until 12 August.
In contrast, Liam Delap struggled again, continuing a difficult spell since his £30m move from Ipswich last summer. Short on confidence, he could be sold, with Chelsea advancing talks to bring in 35-year-old Danny Welbeck as experienced cover.
Welbeck has agreed personal terms and Chelsea are optimistic about a deal, though Brighton have declined to comment.
Chelsea are also discussing a move for 36-year-old midfielder Jordan Henderson from Brentford, aiming to add experience and leadership after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign.
Asked about targeting older players, Alonso said the squad needs balance and that there is a clear plan to build a cohesive team.
With Emmanuel Emegha injured and Nicolas Jackson also in the mix, this was only a very early glimpse of what Alonso’s Chelsea might become.
