Manchester City midfielder Rodri will be out for a “short period of rehabilitation” after undergoing back surgery.
New manager Enzo Maresca announced on Friday that Rodri is scheduled for surgery on Monday, stating, “He needs a holiday, he needs to rest and recover, and then he will be back with us.”
There is currently no timeline set for his return.
City will face Arsenal in the Community Shield on August 16, followed by their Premier League opener against Bournemouth on August 23.
The club reported that Rodri had been experiencing discomfort for some time and has now received a procedure to fix the issue.
With only a year left on his contract, Rodri has been the subject of speculation regarding a potential move to Real Madrid, especially after he played a pivotal role in leading Spain to World Cup victory this month, earning the tournament’s Best Player award.
His last two seasons have been plagued by injuries, including a torn anterior cruciate ligament that kept him out for most of City’s 2024-25 campaign.
In other news, defender Josko Gvardiol has signed a new five-year contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2031, as reported by BBC Sport in June. The 24-year-old Croatia international has played 122 matches for City since arriving from RB Leipzig in August 2023, securing six trophies, including the Premier League in his first season.
