Jobless and Out of Favor:…

In the summer of 2025, he was preparing to leave, but nothing came of it. Again, in January 2026, he found himself at a crossroads without any change. By early August 2026, Diogo Leite bid farewell to Union Berlin, yet as it stands, he remains without a club and without prospects for a career advancement.

This raises an important question: Why hasn’t any club shown interest in signing Diogo Leite? Is it a matter of his ability, or has he simply overextended himself?

It’s not entirely accurate to say that no one wants the 27-year-old defender. According to ‘Sport Bild’, Schalke 04, a Bundesliga team, has recently expressed interest in him. However, reports indicate that Leite turned down a formal offer from the newly promoted club just a few days ago.

Earlier this year, the ‘Berliner Kurier’ reported that the Portuguese player was aiming to join a club competing at least in the Europa League. At that time, ‘Sport Bild’ mentioned that several top Italian teams, like Juventus, AC Milan, and Lazio, were monitoring his situation. Their interest was warranted.

Since his transfer from Porto to Union Berlin in the summer of 2023, Leite has logged 113 appearances in the Bundesliga. Internationally, he has already competed in ten Champions League matches and 15 Europa League matches. He was also a key player for the Köpenick outfit last season.

Leite has stood out particularly for his ability to deliver line-breaking passes and secure clearances in critical situations. Last season, he tallied 213 successful clearances, placing him among the top defenders in the league.

However, his passing accuracy tells a different story. With only 83 percent successful passes, he falls into the lower ranks of Bundesliga defenders. For comparison, league leader Jonathan Tah achieved 96.1 percent. This discrepancy may explain why some clubs are hesitating to sign Leite ahead of the summer of 2026.
