Hansi Flick has stated that Barcelona recognizes the urgency to take action in the transfer market as they seek a successor for Robert Lewandowski.
There is also speculation regarding the future of Barcelona’s other forward from last season, Ferran Torres, whose contract has just one year left to run.
Barcelona has prioritized Atlético Madrid‘s Julián Álvarez as their main target, with club president Joan Laporta confirming a bid of approximately €100 million for the Argentina international, though talks regarding the transfer have currently stalled.
“We have to wait,” said Barça coach Flick when asked about the club’s efforts to acquire a new No. 9 on Monday.
“I have complete faith in [sporting director] Deco and we understand that action is necessary. Their situation will also influence Ferran’s future, and we’ll see how things unfold.”
Lewandowski moved to the Chicago Fire after spending four years at Barça earlier this summer, while Torres is contemplating his own future while on holiday, following his crucial goal for Spain in the World Cup final.
The former Manchester City player has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain and multiple clubs in England, while Barcelona remains open to extending his contract.
Sources suggest that all scenarios are being considered: leaving this summer, departing as a free agent next year, or signing a new deal.
In an appearance on NBC on Monday, Torres stated: “I have a contract with Barça, but in football, anything can happen. I’m just waiting to make the right choice. I’m not sure yet.”
If Torres departs and Barça fails to secure a new striker, Flick may need to explore the options already in his squad for the central forward position.
New signings Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi could both potentially play in a central position, along with Lamine Yamal, although the preference is to recruit a No. 9.
“Lamine has participated in a few matches with us [in a central role], and I believe he’s an exceptional talent, a world-class player, capable of adapting,” Flick remarked. “However, his primary position is still that of a winger, and we will see how things unfold.”

“I believe Gordon and Adeyemi can both operate on either flank and also as a No. 9. So, we actually have plenty of options. We will see what develops.”
While Álvarez is Barcelona’s main focus, the Spanish champions are considering other avenues to strengthen their attack ahead of the upcoming LaLiga season, which begins with a match against Elche on August 23.
Last week, ESPN reported that they inquired about Eli Junior Kroupi‘s availability, although the young French talent has since sustained a foot injury and is anticipated to remain at Bournemouth for the time being.
