Ella Toone and team-mate Maya Le Tissier spoke at United’s pre-WSL media day on Tuesday, less than two days after Marc Skinner’s abrupt exit.
They said Skinner addressed the squad in the dressing room on Monday morning to say his farewells before the announcement was made.
Le Tissier reflected that there had been plenty of challenges as well as good moments. She called the news sad but said the team must move forward, adding that Skinner brought her to the club when she was young and later made her captain—two of the biggest honours of her life—for which she is grateful.
United expect to appoint a new manager soon, with the 2026–27 WSL season starting in a month.
Reports suggest the club want a coach known for developing young players, aligning with a renewed focus on youth recruitment. United have also spent far less on transfers this summer than many WSL rivals.
Despite being among the most experienced players in the squad, Toone and Le Tissier said they have not been consulted on the appointment. Le Tissier noted they’ve been told a decision is close, which would help with pre-season approaching.
Toone said they’ve both played under numerous managers with varying styles and will fully commit to the next coach’s approach. She added the club aims to promote youth while supporting senior players. Though only 26, she joked it’s strange to be seen as one of the older heads, but as leaders they will step up and embrace the new chapter.
Uncertainty remains after five first-team departures this summer, including key striker Melvine Malard to Chelsea. Gabby George is set to join Brighton.
This comes amid questions about investment in the women’s side. Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has faced criticism over his approach to the women’s team and did not attend either of their Women’s FA Cup finals at Wembley.
Even so, Toone and Le Tissier said the squad is united and urged fans to back them. Toone spoke of the family feel since the team’s inception and their habit of sticking together through tough spells. She said once a new manager arrives, they’ll get to work and focus on enjoying their football. Le Tissier added that true supporters will stay with them throughout; the players give everything—just as Marc did.
