Martin O’Neill, the manager of Celtic, is currently in the hospital following a “small procedure,” as confirmed by the club.
Specific details regarding the nature of O’Neill’s operation remain undisclosed, but the 74-year-old is anticipated to be discharged within “the next day or two.”
O’Neill signed a one-year contract in June, becoming the permanent manager after previously leading the team on an interim basis last season, which resulted in a Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double.
He was present on the sidelines on Monday when Celtic launched their new Premiership campaign with a 1-0 victory at home against Dundee.
In light of circulating rumors, Celtic announced on social media, “We can confirm Martin O’Neill has undergone a small procedure in hospital. We expect Martin to be released in the next day or two, and on his behalf, we appreciate the kind wishes from our supporters.”
The statement added, “We kindly request that Martin and his family’s privacy is respected during this time.”
After a period away from management following his role at Nottingham Forest in 2019, O’Neill made a surprising return to Celtic last October, two decades after his first successful tenure. This followed Brendan Rodgers’ resignation.
O’Neill briefly stepped back into the role in December, passing the reins to Wilfried Nancy, who was dismissed after just eight matches, which resulted in O’Neill’s return.
After securing his eighth and ninth major honors with the club, he opted for the full-time role, agreeing to a one-year deal that includes an option for an additional year following discussions with Celtic’s significant shareholder Dermot Desmond.
