Even so, he is considered a trusted, versatile option in attack, often alternating with Robert Lewandowski—now at Chicago Fire—as the central striker and covering across the front line.
The club want to extend his contract, but any new deal is expected to keep him within the current wage structure rather than deliver a significant pay rise.
Reports indicate formal talks could be delayed until September, after the transfer window closes, to avoid impacting Financial Fair Play calculations and their current business.
A renewal would also reportedly trigger a payment of nearly £7m to Manchester City due to a clause from his January 2022 transfer.
Barcelona have not received any formal bids for the Spain international, though—as with any player—they would consider an offer if one arrives.
