Manager Enzo Maresca will personally select Manchester City’s next captain and wants to add an English player to the leadership group, according to BBC Sport sources.
The armband is vacant after former skipper Bernardo Silva left for Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer. The current leadership group features Ruben Dias, Erling Haaland and Rodri, with Barcelona having made a bid for the latter.
English candidates who could step into the group include Phil Foden, Marc Guehi and Nico O’Reilly.
Under former manager Pep Guardiola, Silva was named captain last season, though the role had previously been decided by a players’ vote. Guardiola later chose to take control of the process himself, saying he was unhappy with how things unfolded when Kyle Walker asked to leave and moved to AC Milan in January 2025.
