COUNTY KILDARE, Ireland — Youri Tielemans has stated that FIFA’s unexpected choice to suspend Folarin Balogun‘s red card played a significant role in motivating Belgium‘s performance against the United States during their World Cup knockout match.
Balogun was allowed to participate in the round of 16, despite receiving a red card in the previous match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, thanks to Donald Trump advocating for a review of the ban by FIFA.
After several days of controversy, which included UEFA asserting that FIFA had crossed a “red line,” Belgium emerged victorious with a score of 4-1. Tielemans suggested that the sense of unfairness contributed to Belgium’s commanding performance.
“I believe that this is part of the game,” remarked the Manchester United midfielder.
“The celebrations after the match were enjoyable and light-hearted; everything was great.
“We were taken aback by the decision to overturn the red card and suspension.
“Ultimately, it didn’t significantly affect our preparation for the game, as he is a different type of player than the one initially slated to play. Regardless, we remained composed and accepted our situation, aiming for a solid performance.”
Tielemans’ World Cup journey ended abruptly due to a late injury that ruled him out of Belgium’s quarterfinal match against the eventual champions, Spain.
Having struggled with injuries last season, which sidelined him for extended periods between September and November and again from January to April, the 29-year-old is now back in training with his new United teammates in Ireland and is expected to feature in the preseason match against Leeds United in Dublin on Wednesday.

“Looking back at the World Cup, we played 120 minutes against Senegal and faced a tight schedule afterward,” he explained.
“We took on the U.S. just three or four days later, followed by a match against Spain three days thereafter. Unfortunately, during warm-ups, my body gave out for an unknown reason.
“I don’t believe I’m someone who necessarily requires rest. While there are a lot of matches and the coach has to manage the squad, I feel great when I’m fit.
“Sadly, when things aren’t going well physically, I notice it right away and inform the manager, but that doesn’t happen too often.”
